From Distant Sisters to Bookish Best Friends

How Reading With My Sister Brought Us Back to Each Other

Katie and I were not the “built-in best friends” sisters growing up.

We loved each other, obviously. But we were different. Different personalities. Different rhythms. Different worlds. She was quiet and I was…not…She loved peace, and I was here for the party. We didn’t share the same personality traits.

What we did share, even back then, was a love for books.

We both grew up reading, escaping into stories. Carrying paperbacks around like emotional support water bottles. Books were always there… even when we weren’t fully there for each other yet.

And somehow, years later, that shared love of reading is what brought us back together.

Books Gave Us a Common Language

I think sometimes we assume sibling closeness is automatic. It’s not.

Relationships evolve. They soften. They deepen over time, especially when you choose to invest in them as adults.

Reading together became our way of choosing each other.

It’s our thing…Our built-in conversation starter. Our excuse to carve out time in busy adult lives.

Out of all the ways books bring people together, this might be my favorite: the way stories can quietly rebuild connection.

Currently Booked Exists Because of This

It’s honestly wild when I think about it.

CurrentlyBooked.com exists because two sisters who loved reading as kids grew up… and kept loving reading.

What started as shared paperbacks and library trips has turned into blog posts, book discussions, recommendations, late-night voice memos, and “you HAVE to read this” texts.

Books didn’t just shape our childhood. They shaped our adulthood. They shaped our relationship. And that feels sacred <3

How Books Bring People Together

People talk about reading as a solo hobby, and it is, in many ways.

But it’s also connective. Think book clubs. Buddy reads. Annotated copies passed back and forth. Heated debates over endings. Crying over fictional characters like they’re mutual friends.

Stories create shared emotional experiences.

For Katie and me, reading together is how we do life together!

Through busy seasons, through being states apart.

There is something so precious about having a sister who not only understands your real life, but also understands why a fictional plot twist can ruin your entire week. And why a bad day can turn into a good day by taking a simple trip to the bookstore.

Final Thoughts (From a Grateful Sister)

I don’t take it lightly that we get to do life together now. That we get to build something together.
That our conversations revolve around stories instead of small talk. That our bond strengthened not through something dramatic (though we have plenty of those), but through something quiet and consistent.

Books have always been home for me, and somehow, they led me back to my sister.

And if that’s not the most beautiful full-circle moment… I don’t know what is <3
