Goodnight Monsters by Suzanne Junered: A Domestic Thriller That Will Leave You Questioning Everything

Goodnight Monsters by Suzanne Junered is the kind of domestic thriller that makes you question not only the characters, but your own perception of what you’re reading.

And honestly? My brain is still spinning.

From the very beginning, I found myself constantly trying to separate what was real from what was reality…and that is exactly what made this book such a compelling read. From the very first page, I felt like Lia was an incredibly unreliable narrator, and I mean that in the absolute best way. Just when I thought I had a handle on what was happening, the story would make me second-guess myself all over again. 😂

And to be super clear…that constant uncertainty is one of the things I loved most about Goodnight Monsters. It isn’t simply a story that asks, “Who did it?” It makes you wonder, “Wait…what exactly am I looking at here?”

I Thought I Knew What Was Happening

This is a spoiler free review, so I am going to keep this vague (I’m sorry or you’re welcome…just depends on which side of the fence you land on 😉 but at one point, I felt pretty certain that I KNEW what was happening in the storyline. I just had this gut feeling that I was a a blue heeler sniffing out the plot line and I had it down.

Um, plot twist. I was wrong. I didn’t see it coming.

And Bonus- A Thriller for the True-Crime Curious

As someone who genuinely enjoys true crime (helllllo Crime Junkies!), one of my favorite elements of this book was the investigative side of the story…particularly the exploration surrounding the Farm.

Through Lia’s obsession with death and murder, Junered takes readers into a fascinating look at bodies and the different stages of death. While there are certainly some unsettling moments, I never felt that the descriptions crossed into gratuitous gore. Instead, I found myself genuinely interested in the educational and investigative aspects of it.

Walking around the Farm and hearing about the Adams and Eves and their stages of decomposition was fascinating to me.

There was something about learning alongside Lia…examining death almost clinically while simultaneously trying to understand her obsession with it. That added another layer of interest to the story.

And for readers who enjoy true crime, forensic details, or the darker investigative side of thrillers, I think this will be a particularly interesting element of the book.

But Here’s the Thing…

My mind is blown.

I finished Goodnight Monsters and immediately wanted to talk to someone about it. And then I realized I couldn’t really talk about why without giving away the very things that made the experience so much fun.

So, without spoilers, I’ll simply say this:

I want a Goodnight Monsters 2.0.

There are books you finish, close, and move on to the next one.

And then there are books you finish and just…sit there.

Goodnight Monsters was the second kind for me.

My brain is still going back through the story, replaying moments, questioning what I thought I understood, and wondering what I may have missed along the way. That lingering feeling is a huge part of why this landed as a 4-star read for me.

Junered has created a domestic thriller that kept me questioning reality, second-guessing the narrator, and turning pages because I needed to understand what was happening.

And even after finishing it, I’m not sure my brain has completely caught up yet.

Which, honestly, is exactly what I want from a good thriller.
