Summary

Amelia arrives at a remote Tuscan castello to help catalog its contents and prepare it to become a museum, hoping the work will give her something to focus on after a devastating loss.

But while exploring the castello, she discovers an old trunk filled with diaries belonging to a woman named Flavia.

Through those pages, Amelia is pulled into life in Nazi-occupied Italy—where love, friendship, resistance, and betrayal shape Flavia’s world. When the diary abruptly ends with missing pages, Amelia can’t let it go. As she searches for answers in the castello and village below, she begins to uncover secrets that have been buried for decades… along with a connection to Flavia she never expected.

Review

Story & Structure

This is a dual timeline story, and both timelines are equally strong.

Amelia’s present-day storyline gives you that sense of mystery and discovery, while Flavia’s chapters completely pull you into the past. The way the story unfolds through the diaries kept me hooked—I always wanted to read just one more chapter to figure out what really happened.

And that missing-pages element? It works. It gives the whole book this underlying tension that keeps you invested and wanting more the entire time.

Characters

The characters are very well developed, though there are quite a few to keep track of at times.

Flavia’s story is really the heart of the book. Her strength, her choices, and everything she goes through during the war felt all too real.

Amelia’s journey also worked well for me. Her grief and need for answers made sense, and it tied the past and present together in a meaningful way. I can’t say I wouldn’t want to find the answers myself.

Setting & Atmosphere

The Tuscan setting is one of the standout elements.

You can really picture the castello, the village, and the landscape—it adds so much to the overall feel of the story. There’s a strong contrast between the beauty of the setting and the heaviness of what happened there, which makes it even more impactful.

What Worked Best

• The dual timeline kept me fully invested
• The mystery element made it hard to put down
• A WWII story that felt fresh and different
• Strong emotional impact without feeling overdone

What I Wanted More Of

I do wish there had been more information at the end about the true events that inspired the story. I found myself really curious about what was real and whether any of the characters were based on actual people.

I read this as an ARC on my Kindle, and it was a great reading experience—easy to follow and hard to put down.

That said… this is one I’m seriously considering buying as a physical copy. The cover is absolutely stunning, and it’s the kind of book I’d love to have on my shelf.

This book completely pulled me in from the very first page.

Even if you’ve read a lot of WWII fiction, this one stands out. The Italian setting, the layered mystery, and the emotional depth all come together in a way that feels fresh and memorable.

It’s heartbreaking, yes—but also full of resilience, love, and the kind of story that sticks with you long after you finish the last page.

If you enjoy historical fiction with strong female characters, dual timelines, and a touch of mystery, this is definitely worth picking up.
