This was a Book of the Month pick for me, and from the very first chapters, I knew it was going to be a quick, fast-moving read…the kind that quietly pulls you in and then refuses to let you go. Best Offer Wins is a fast-paced, twisty psychological novel centered around the cutthroat reality of today’s housing market, where dream homes spark obsession.

The story follows a driven main character, Margo, who is deeply invested in securing the perfect home with her fiancé, Ian. What begins as a familiar, relatable experience (i.e., searching listings, submitting offers, hoping this one will finally be the one) quickly escalates into something far more complex.

As the stakes rise, the narrative weaves together (questionable) personal ambition, secrecy, and carefully calculated choices. Every interaction feels layered, and every character seems to carry more weight and insider information than they initially let on. The result is a story that constantly asks the reader to reconsider what they think they know.

The Characters That Drive the Tension

One of the reasons Best Offer Wins is so effective is its tight cast of characters, each one playing a specific role in building suspense and emotional stakes.

• The Main Character: Margo. Ambitious, strategic, and increasingly unpredictable. Her desire to secure her dream home and perfect life becomes the lens through which the entire story unfolds.
• The Fiancé: Ian. A grounding presence who represents stability, partnership, and the future they’re supposedly building together. His role adds emotional pressure and raises the stakes of every decision. He is NOT so into the house-hunting experience and seems quite content with their current lifestyle.
• The Friend from the Apartment Complex: Natalie. An off-the-wall, erratic friend of Margo’s who lives in the same apartment complex. (Also, owner of the beloved dog, Fritter.)
• The Homeowner: Jack. One half of the couple selling the coveted house. He is rather welcoming to a blossoming friendship with Margo.
• The Husband: Curt, Jack’s protective counterpart who is skeptical of new, budding friendships.
• The Daughter: Penny. Innocent, observant, and ultimately the grounding source for her parents, Jack and Curt. 

Together, these characters create a web of relationships that feels intimate and unsettling…especially as the lies start spewing. 

Why This Book Works So Well

One of the biggest strengths of Best Offer Wins is its pacing.

This is not a book that lingers unnecessarily. Every chapter feels purposeful, and there’s a steady forward momentum that makes it dangerously easy to say, just one more chapter, and then suddenly you’re at the end.

A few things that really stood out:

• The chapters are short and digestible
• The tension builds consistently without dragging
• The writing is clean, accessible, and easy to follow

It’s the kind of book you can read in just a few sittings, just like I did on the airplane, or one very late night.

The Ending (AKA: I Did Not See That Coming)

I’ll be the first to admit I did not see the ending coming.

And honestly, that’s one of the highest compliments I can give a book like this.

Without giving anything away, the conclusion manages to feel both surprising and earned. It reframes earlier moments in a way that makes you want to immediately flip back and rethink what you thought you knew.

If you’re someone who loves a twist that actually lands, this one delivers.

Final Thoughts

Best Offer Wins is proof that a book doesn’t have to be long or complicated to be effective.

It’s sharp, engaging, and surprisingly thought-provoking — especially when it comes to the lengths we’ll go to in pursuit of “winning.” If you’re looking for a fast read that still packs a punch, this one is absolutely worth picking up.
